About Rinzai Zen and Zenways

Rinzai Zen is a style of traditional meditation. The tradition extends back 2500 years with its roots in Buddhist monastic practice. Many of these ancient techniques and practices have been influential in the development of the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) programmes which have become widely recognised and researched in healthcare settings in recent years.

In the UK, the Rinzai Zen tradition is being disseminated by Julian Daizan Skinner, creator and founder of Zenways and the first Englishman to achieve the status of Zen Master in the Rinzai Zen tradition. Zenways promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening in the many different situations we find ourselves in. The Zenways courses I teach work with body, mind and energy to enable you to create greater vitality and awareness, and to develop a deep sense of your connection with all things and your true connection with the universe.

Zenways is recognised by the College of Mindful Clinicians for its role in developing and delivering meditation programmes and retreats. Zenways also approves certification and provides supervision to its teachers.”

Russell Razzaque, Dean of College of Mindful Clinicians

Zenways are of the strong belief that scientific validation of these ancient practices will increase even further their credibility in the modern world. As such they are currently participating in a research project, entitled “The Influence of Mindfulness and Meditation on Overall Life Satisfaction”, in collaboration with academic colleagues at Oxford University, under the Departments of Materials and Experimental Psychology. Ethics approval MSD/IDREC/C1/2012/79.

Zen is a way of liberation, concerned not with discovering what is good or bad or advantageous, but what is.”
